How to Pack Your Whole Life into Three Suitcases

One of the biggest fears people have about moving abroad isn’t the paperwork—it’s deciding what to take. The truth is, you don’t need to move your entire house to begin a new chapter. You only need the essentials and a plan.

When I moved abroad, I quickly realized that most of what I owned could be replaced. What couldn’t be replaced were my passport, important documents, medications, electronics, and a few personal items that truly mattered. Everything else was simply “stuff.”

A simple strategy is to divide your belongings into three categories:

  • Keep & Pack It earns a place in a suitcase — useful, loved, or hard to replace.
  • Sell It has value and you won’t miss it.
  • Start early; it takes time.
  • Give Away To family, friends, or donation. A gift given is never really lost. Store Irreplaceable but not coming yet — one small box with someone you trust. Digitize Photos, letters, documents. Scan it, keep the memory, free the shelf

INSIDE THE GUIDE PREVIEW

Before packing, ask yourself one simple question: “Would I pay to ship this?” If the answer is no, it probably doesn’t need to make the journey.

Remember that almost every country has stores where you can buy household goods, clothing, and everyday necessities. Trying to pack for every possible situation only adds stress, weight, and expense.

Moving abroad isn’t about transporting your old life—it’s about creating a new one. The lighter you travel, the easier your transition becomes.
